In what ways does your media production use, develop or challenge forms& conventions of real media products
Conventions in horror products are the features that are extracted from previous products from films that have been successful. This is to use and build their own product so that they can appeal to the audience in the same way, but at the same time not imitating the product fully.
An example of these media products is that on horror magazines they will have a bar code, or a BBM bar code with flashy gory writing and a stand out headline. Another is that on a poster there is a release date and credits along with the production companies and film companies logos at the bottom, they have a dark look and some contain blood. The final example of media conventions is in a horror trailer there are eerie sounds and a sharp but hard hitting montage.
However some of these conventions are challenged and this can have a negative effect and attract more consumers or it could have a negative impact and deter consumers.

YouTube

Through the use of YouTube were able to distribute our trailer to the public for viewing, and at the same time we were able
Many aspiring film makers use YouTube to make their films available to the public, so by using the free video up loader to promote our trailer we are following conventions. Also we used it to upload the behind the scenes as well as making of certain features that were used within the trailer, and this shows the process of developing the trailer.
The use of the trailer on YouTube is also a basic step that even professional film companies use to promote their film and allows mass marketing. By using YouTube we follow the conventions of professional film companies.
The purpose of a teaser trailer is to give the public/viewers/ consumers a taste of what to expect in the actual trailer or even just for the final product (the film). This is what entices the public to go and see the full length film.
As part of our coursework for A2 Media we have been asked to produce a teaser trailer and upload all the video footage made of the process as well as the final product itself.
YouTube was used as one of our main forms of distribution as it is free to market the product and it is used by many other film companies which follows the conventions and processes that a normal film company takes to produce a teaser trailer or a full length trailer.

Conventions followed and used as inspiration
Poster Conventions:
These are posters that we used to form our final poster. We took traits from these posters and we have compiled the selected posters into this slide show so that the basic and more obvious conventions can be seen at glance (the main ones are broken down) and all the parts of these posters will come together and be seen in our final product (poster).
The majority of poster as well as trailer conventions that we followed are extracted from the REC series and followed, traits such as the blood around the mouth, the abnormal eyes, the unearthly screech and the movements/ actions of the zombies.
One way we challenged conventions is that we didn't just extract traits from zombie posters but we looked at various other posters and dragged in their features.
After the main posters were used, traits from other posters were dragged into it. The main posters used were the following three:
REC, 1408 & Night Watch

Storyline
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/2158959.jpg)
The story follows conventions of a normal zombie story line for infected zombies as the zombie epidemic started from a lab (hence the name LAB for the trailer) and it is usually is caused from trying to do greater good, for example in a lot of trailers they try to find the cause for cancer and will cause a greater problem. This is the reason for our tag-line "the cause is the sure". The rebel students cause a disequilibrium by breaking the glass that contained the chemical that was being developed to cure cancer and caused the zombie outbreak. ended up with.
Zombie Type
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/495763.jpeg)
We chose to use running zombies as they are modern and build more tension with even just one of them spotting and approaching a survivor. The modern zombies will be able to follow the modern day conventions of zombie films and in addition to that the infection zombies suit the story line as the disequilibrium that brings about the zombies is due to contaminated DNA or infection which follows the conventions of most zombie films by following those factors to build a story line.
These type of zombies are more dangerous and rabid, building more tension as they are more animalistic and it causes a sinister effect as they can just rip a survivor to bits with just one of them, and it allows us to even expand on how we can spread infection other than bite. Also in addition to that just one of them is a major problem due to how animalistic they are and how wildly they behave, in comparison to the stiffer and less mobile type of zombies.
They can pose a threat individually so as a horde they would have a major tension build up, and this follows conventions of such films like Dawn of the dead, REC and 28 weeks later as in all of these an individual zombie is seen as a major threat and when they become a horde they cause major tension build up. This helps show the animalistic side to the zombies as wild animals such as hyenas are dangerous by themselves but absolutely deadly in a pack, representing how they are wild and animalistic. To further on this point in a lot of zombie movies, the zombies move in packs and hordes to hunt their prey, which is a representation of how they are animalistic, coupled with the fact that in a lot of zombie movies they portray a lot of animalistic movement and sounds such as screeching/ growling and rabid running at prey.
Also by using these type of zombies we are able to show the true representation of zombies, mass consumerism. Zombies represents mass consumerism as all they do is consume and consume non-stop, slowly killing the world which can represent how people who just consume and consume are slowly killing away the world by continuously consuming the earths natural resources. Also it represents a lack of identity as a zombie might be different in appearance but they are all doing the same thing (trying to feed) which represents the lack in identity through the fact non of the zombies do anything different, chasing the same thing.

Costume and Make up
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/4855650.jpg?256)
The teenagers costume follows stereotypes of teenagers in education as they are wearing the traditional school uniform. This is to convey to the audience that it is based in a college, and also to represent to the fullest extent the conventions and the stereotypes of teenagers in general and in films. Also it allowed us to make the teacher stand out because he was the only one wearing a lab coat, shirt with a jumper and glasses. This follows he stereotypes of adults as they are supposedly meant to be dressed in a mature way and hey also are meant to be responsible. B wearing the lab coat it indicates that the teacher is aware of the safety regulations of a lab and has taken the appropriate precautions representing responsibility.
The costume that was used will also allow the fake blood to stand out, using bright shades. To further on that point, by using black on one of our zombies they looked more threatening in contrast to the ones in white shirts, which also helps to show that the majority of the students were zombies.
Also to show the animalistic conventions by putting one of our actors into a black shirt in contrast to the others in white it shows he is the leader of the pack, and this shows the animal like instincts as in every pack of animals there is a pack leader and in the sense of zombies he was the leader of that pack or the "alpha zombie". This also ties into our story line as the actor playing CJ was the leader of his pack of friends before he became a zombie.

Old School Zombie or 21st Century
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/8487560.jpg)
We chose to use running zombies as they are the most dangerous kind and only one of them is required to cause a danger. The modern type of zombie also suites the story line of trailer.
We thought that ti use undead would require a lot of zombies and we didn't have the required amount as undead zombies or walkers are only dangerous in packs or hordes which would not have worked well as we didn't have that many actors at our disposal, so in terms of resources the infected zombies seemed more achievable. On top of that by using infection zombies we were able to properly utilize the convention of chase scenes which is convention used a lot in zombie trailers such as the rec 2 trailer and zombie films such as resident evil.
Also with infected zombies you have the chance to develop conventions like films such as Land of the dead have done by displaying the primitive side of zombies. This then leads to them learning how to function like human beings and eventually the zombies learn to use weapons, think logically which in some ways displays or gives a representation of how the human race evolved.
To further on that point there is a moment in that film where the zombies ambush an army base almost like the army would showing how their minds evolved. Also there is a point where the leader of the zombie pack shoots a gun like a human would and he kills another zombie which in a lot of ways represents the human race and how much destruction evolving can cause to a race.

Infected Zombie Stereotypes and Conventions
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/4094983.jpg?377)
By using the infected zombies we were able to stick to trends and follow many conventions, such as the bloody make up and the change in eyes prior to DNA contamination.
The typical stereotypes with these types of zombies is they behave more human, but extremely more animalistic and this is very scientific as this relates to the animal cells in the human body and causing the human brain to become what is known as "brain dead" turning the human primitive and causing the brain to demand the body to acquire its most highest priority function which is to feed so the body can stay alive.
We were able to incorporate these characteristics of zombies into our trailer as our story line followed the requirements and rules that would enable us to use these kind of zombies. Therefore we were following the conventions well enough in the aspect of story line and followed up with zombie type.

Blood Convention

This mood board portrays the convention that zombies on the appearance of zombies in terms of make up.
The blood on and around the mouth connotes the genre and sub genre as blood and gore symbolizes horror and the blood around the mouth shows that the sub genre is zombies as zombies are constantly feeding so they will have blood around their mouth to represent this.

Location
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/3718307.jpg?297)
The location of our trailer is to help establish to target the specified audience the trailer is aimed at, and to follow the conventions of a teenager. The location would follow the stereotypes of teenagers so it was the ideal location for the trailer as the characters were teenagers.
Also in addition to that, the location was very ideal for us to challenge stereotypes as there is meant to be order and control in a college, however by following the stereotypes of the teenagers being mischievous we were able to break the disequilibrium and cause chaos within the college breaking the normality and challenging the conventions of a place for education.

George A. Romero
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/9417784.jpg?229)
After watching many George Romero films we were able to establish the conventions of a lot of zombie films and develop on them. For example after watching Land of the dead we were able to establish the body movements and behavior of zombies.
By observing some of George Romero's work we were having an insight as to how he portrays zombies, and how he uses them to create tension. Also this went down in our eyes as research because if we were to research zombies, who better to research than the godfather of zombies himself George Romero.
We compared a lot of George Romero's old work (such as his first zombie film Night of the living dead) and one of his more recent pieces of work such as Land of the dead, day of the dead and many more.
We explored through each of his pieces of work how he had his actors move and we noticed a convention that zombies from the older days (walkers) have a tendency to move with their arms to grab and bite, however in his more recent work George Romero has his actors attack with the mouth, so instead of grabbing they tend to bite and then grab. This convention follows through onto many films such as 28 days/ weeks later, the REC trilogy and many other modern day zombie films. Also in addition to that the development of zombies has meant that even through scratch they can transmit infection, however the viewers forget this as the zombies are always attacking with the mouth and this causes mass tension amongst the viewer, thus effectively proving that a lot of conventions have been based around George Romero's concepts and theories on zombies.

Trailer Conventions
This was a screen recording that we organized and conducted by one member of our group showing which trailers were used and what aspects of those trailers we incorporated into our own trailer and why we did it, plus how it worked out.
Eye Convention
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/3004450.jpg?364)
This portrays the convention that prior to the infection of a person or contamination of their DNA , their DNA will change resulting in the many conventions of a zombie, and in this particular instance a change in the colour of the eyes.
A lot of the zombies that have eyes that are more abnormal compared to the skin tone. So for example on a lighter skinned character a yellow or red eye would be ideal, and because the actors in our trailer were dark skinned the eyes were black and this allowed us to use a white out contact lens so that it created an abnormal or rather unearthly look. For example the zombies in Dawn of the dead have whited out eyes.

Captions
The crazies captions
LAB captions (following the conventions of the crazies captions)
We followed the convention of these captions because the background provides a very grimy and grungy look and at the same time the background also looks very evil, cold and dark which eliminates all friendly feeling from the captions. Also the captions looked infectious in a way and this links back to our genre of zombies (infectious) so it seemed very ideal to use. Also another reason we adopted the convention is that the text was very basic but against the background stood out very much and it looked professional, whereas other texts looked to childish, cartoon like and even comic book like. However we did develop the convention by adding a bad TV effect to the captions to give it a unique look, and causing them to crab (move sideways) to the right just before the bad TV.
The bad TV effect can be seen below.
The bad TV effect can be seen below.
REC/ REC 2/ REC 3 ShotsThe above shots are screen shots taken from the REC trilogy trailers which are below paired in order with the LAB screen shots to show how shots were mirrored.
Also the shots from the REC trilogy were mirrored in the LAB trailer through choice of camera techniques and subject representations (the type of angle used to shoot and how the zombies are acting, or what they are doing). |
LAB ShotsThe above shots are proof of conventions followed as all the above shots are mirrored from the REC trilogy and are used in our own teaser trailer. For the majority of the shots the same camera angles were used, and the same kind of scenario was used to an extent. However on all the shots we developed on the type of lighting. We used natural lighting for a lot of the shots, but a lot of the other shots we filmed in a dark space and used technological lighting to brighten up the shot enough to see it clearly, but not so light the it gave the viewer a sense of security, as the conventions in most trailers is that darkness builds tension.
|
Lighting Convention
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/2360757.jpg?333)
In most horror films and trailers, regardless of the sub genre they like to utilize dark for filming with because when certain scenarios are executed in the dark they become more tense and much more suspenseful as well as giving the viewer a sense of insecurity, whereas in light everyone would feel safe.
By manipulating one of the most feared factors of humans (the dark) and putting it into a trailer it effectively executes jump scares.
In relation to LAB the last jump scare was in complete darkness making it very suspenseful and unexpected. However we used a lot of well naturally lit shots as to try and give the audience a sense of feel that no one is safe in the light as well as if they are in the dark.

Rec Trilogy
The REC series proved very helpful in terms of inspiration towards our trailer, as they portrayed our type of zombie (infection) and displayed many conventions of typical infected zombies, from the deranged looks, behavior, the make up and the sounds they make. We took these conventions and challenged them to make our own zombies unique, used them or developed them to give our trailer its own unique look.

through facial expressions and how they are presented in terms
of make up (fake blood, contacts and red mouth) that make up

motion and the deranged head movements coupled with the
piercing glare.

Staircase Scene
|
|
This is a convention that we followed in our trailer as this shot proved extremely effective to build tension and keep the viewer on the edge of their seat as the the zombies were all in one location and at the same time directing their attention to the survivors. Coupled with the unearthly screeches and deranged movements proved an effective shot cause fear which is the core aim to be achieved in any visual horror product.
We adopted this convention and used it as the end of our montage so we could couple it with a white fade to mimic the white burn from Dawn of the dead as we felt it would be a very effective grouping to result in a very powerful shot and transition. As well as using it for that reason it was a long take for part of the montage which can be linked with the end of the montage in the crazies trailer as they have a prolonged last shot (longer take/ long take) which worked well as we could then capture all the deranged movements of the actors to convey the stereotypical animalistic actions of a zombie. On top of that the shot creates panic with all the zombies being spotted and then redirecting their attention, and in our shot we represented this through the use of zombies reaching from the top to grab the survivors.
This shot also showed the animalistic side of zombies as they are in a pack, which is how most animals hunt for food.

Bad TV
|
|
The bad TV in our trailer was used as a convention to build tension, and in some instances used for transition of scenes. In effect the bad TV was used to kill the pace of the montages in REC and in effect allowed them to use a new paced sound. This resulted in the ability for REC to build tension again after they had killed the pace. The bad TV in our trailer was used to create a slight jump, or jump scare.
Fast Cutting Montage
|
|
The montage on the Crazies: 1:44 - 2:21
Crazies Montage
LAB Montage
The pacing of the crazies montage is mirrored to our trailer in terms of the montage as we had similar pacing and the types of shots used are very similar in terms of telling the story. The crazies montage tells the story of how the infection has altered normal life and portrays the animalistic behavior of the zombies, and displays the look of a lot of the zombies due to infection. We also in our trailer used these same techniques.
An example of how we followed trailer conventions is that the end scene is prolonged compared to the rest of the trailer, this is to build on tension and to build on the tension leading to the jump scare. However the crazies used slow motion editing, so we developed this question by using the same timing and slowly fading it out to white to imitate a film burn effect.
The clear shots of zombies was used a lot in the crazies montage and we developed this by showing many shots of zombies (quick glimpses as it is a montage so it can't be slowly paced) establishing the genre of the trailer and not confusing the viewer. This was done through the convention of make up and body movement.

Fade to white/ burn
|
|
(Due to technical difficulties please may you watch this on You Tube)
Burn on Dawn of the dead trailer: 2:08 - 2:21
The fade to white is to imitate the burn. It is also to builds tension and acts as a punctuation, signifying the end of the montage and slowly fades out to the next scene.
The transition fade to next scene is slow, having a very dramatic effect and because we did it after the montage such as Dawn of the dead have (following conventions) we have built up tension to the jump scare.

Jump Scare

Jump scare on REC trailer: 1:31
What conventions did we follow?
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/7/13676414/1973204.jpg?344)
A jump scare is meant to either make the audience jump or to catch them off guard through building suspense and either having one quick cut scene.
The convention of jump scares is that it should be quick and just the one. We followed and developed conventions by making various quick cuts our jump scare and then ending with two quick cuts. This helps to build suspense and the pacing goes with the whole trailer, maintaining the same consistency. The first jump scare is so quick and so loud that it keeps the viewer on their toes. We followed this convention and made ours a similar pacing, and in addition to that we too had a jump scare that was intended mainly to keep the viewer on their toes, but we developed this so that it causes a jump as when they watch the trailer the footage will take them by surprise and the sound will cause them to jump and it is a short eerie sound that allows us to cause build up to the second jump scare. The main development of the jump scare convention was that it allowed our first jump scare to build up a lot of tension to our second jump scare.
In addition being that there is no sound follows conventions of a jump scare, as there is usually no sound or very little sound. This makes suspense build as the little or no sound causes the audience to put their guard down, but at the same time try and anticipate the jump scare and when it happens it is so quick and the viewer is so concentrated on trying to predict it they become caught unaware and the jump scare in effect becomes successful.
Also what we did to develop conventions is when the zombie is spotted behind the student there is no noise and this builds tension as the audience will notice and usually they would make a growl sound to assert their presence but being there is no sound it comes as a bigger surprise. In addition to that a quick cut of blood dripping grabs the audiences attention and we followed conventions by doing the jump scare and cutting it to black immediately.
We also developed conventions by adding a second jump scare with sound to catch the audience unaware and this proves effective as the main point of a jump scare is to catch the viewer out when they least expect it. The viewer would already think it is over from the first jump scare and then the second jump scare follows normal conventions of a jump scare as it is very quick and it immediately cuts to captions afterward. However with this jump scare we changed the growl and added the same growl but a second time straight after when the captions appear to add a more tense effect.

Conventions we developed

We used the jump scare from REC 3 to help achieve the development of our second jump scare convention, as in their trailer they have someone talking to the camera and then it quick cuts to scene where someone is jumping at two girls. This causes the viewer to jump as it starts off with a normal situation and then for something to distort that normality in such a short space of time it completely takes the viewer by surprise. When the jump scare occurs there is a loud scream and it immediately cuts to black, which we saw and decided to develop that convention and add a second growl to keep the audience on their toes.

This successfully shows that our jump scare is effective in terms of pacing timing and gets the right kind of jump due to cutting.
